Nuova Scuola Primaria a Biassono

Designing a school means taking care of the future and envisioning spaces that are not merely containers of functions, but places capable of supporting growth, fostering relationships and building community. The project for the New Primary School of Biassono stems from this responsibility: to shape a safe, inclusive environment, open to its surroundings and deeply rooted in the landscape.

The building is set within the Parco delle Generazioni as part of a broader system, where architecture, nature, and everyday life are interwoven. Not an isolated volume, but a composition of pavilions with a measured scale, echoing traditional Brianza rural architecture and settling discreetly into the surrounding greenery. The school does not impose itself on the landscape: it moves through it, completes it and brings it to life. The park becomes a true extension of the educational space. Here, outdoor learning activities take place alongside moments of play and intergenerational encounters. It is a place where learning also means observing, cultivating, moving and sharing. The presence of the amphitheater, the areas dedicated to the educational garden and the pathways through the greenery transforms the school experience into a daily narrative shaped by nature, the body and relationships. At the heart of the project lies the idea of the school as a civic core. The large square facing Via Locatelli is conceived as a threshold space between the city and the school: an open, permeable place where students, families and citizens come together. The library, gymnasium, cafeteria and spaces for events and cultural activities are not merely school facilities, but active components of a social infrastructure designed for the entire community.

The interior spaces are organized to promote flexibility, cooperation and shared learning. Classrooms open onto courtyards and outdoor areas, naturally extending educational activities beyond the interior. Movable partitions allow spaces to be reconfigured according to educational needs, overcoming the notion of the classroom as a closed and static environment. Here, learning becomes dynamic, interdisciplinary and relational. Great attention is also given to the well-being of both children and teachers. Natural light enters the spaces in a balanced way, creating calm and comfortable environments. The constant relationship with greenery, the presence of decompression spaces and the quality of air and acoustics together create a welcoming setting, capable of reducing stress and enhancing concentration.

The project interprets sustainability not as a technological performance, but as a cultural attitude: respect for resources, attention to everyday use and long-term durability. Green roofs, the network of cycling paths, the encouragement of soft mobility and the organization of outdoor spaces as places for gathering are choices that reinforce the idea of a responsible school—one that is capable of educating also through example. Above all, this school is conceived as a place of life. In the morning it welcomes children; in the afternoon it opens up to neighborhood activities; in the evening it becomes a space for events, sports and culture. A building that lives in continuity with the city, without rigidity or barriers, transforming itself into an educational and social hub.

The new primary school in Biassono is a project that places people at its center. An architecture conceived to teach, but also to listen, include and generate connections. A place where the future is not only imagined, but built every day.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) investigates architecture across its entire temporal span. Through GWP, the climatic weight of the project is measured, while Embodied Carbon quantifies its invisible impact: the latent emissions rooted in the life cycle of matter, from its genesis to its dissolution. These parameters mark a crucial evolution in design thinking. The focus shifts from the mere operation of the inhabited building to the very act of building itself, imposing a new ethics of materials that recognizes how architecture’s most profound imprint is forged long before the space is ever experienced.

GWP¹:

Embodied Carbon²:

¹ Life Cycle Assessment in accordance with the EN 15804 +A2 standard
² Calculated over a 60-year period for construction materials only (excluding MEP) from cradle to grave (A1-A4, B4-B5, C1-C4)
