Nuovo Ponte sul Torrente Pora

concorso di progettazione per un nuovo ponte a Finale Ligure

WINNING PROJECT

The new bridge over the Pora torrent was born as a physical, environmental and receptive expression of the Finale Ligure area. The ambition pursued is the creation of a bridge at the service of the community and the landscape that can tell through its forms the identity and complexity of the place, the dialogue with the orographic-hydraulic context and the synergy with the transformation of the local road system. All this without relinquishing its iconic role within the city’s urban and receptive system. The formal language, through a strong similarity with the orographic and tectonic landscape of the mountains surrounding the village, represents the fusion between the functional character of the building and the inclusive aspect of accessible reception.

The bridge expresses its insertion into the site’s altimetrical and orographic complexity through an organic design that finds the foundations of its aesthetic grammar in the orography’s own forms, in the essence of the cycle paths (trails) dedicated to hiking, and in the autochthonous colours of local artefacts, such as the pitched roofs of private houses or historical palaces and public buildings.

A very fluid organic body that varies its geometries, leaving the task of revealing the shape to the light in a progressive and changing dynamic play that renews itself in continuity with the diurnal and seasonal solar cycle. The single span lends lightness to a simple, clean design consisting of a single uninterrupted arc. The rhythmic metal skin accompanies the physical development of the bridge also on the sides, enhancing the frontal and perspective visual perception appreciable from the banks. On the one hand, the absence of pylons allows water to flow away without creating barriers and obstacles for debris carried during rainy periods, and at the same time, it allows the garden area below to be left almost untouched. There will, however, be a portion of this area that will be affected by the revision of the riverbed for reasons of hydraulic feasibility.
